Gloucestershire 2nd's beat Gwent at Lansdown

Wessex League - Gloucestershire 2nd Team v Gwent 2nd Team

The 2nd team entertained Gwent at Lansdown on Sunday 8th October in a crunch league match against the undefeated league leaders knowing a win would put the them in pole position themselves.

The morning foursomes could not have started any better with lead off pair Joe Biscoe and Ethan Holway winning 4&3 followed by the 2nd pair of Ryan Prosser and Charlie Taylor-Madge winning 3&2. The 3rd pairing saw debutant Lee Hanson and Captain Neil Tocknell go 3 down after 4 holes but they managed to turn this deficit around by halfway and they pulled away on the back nine to produce a 4&3 victory. The final pairing of Dave Allison and Dylan Duffy produced a more sensational comeback after being 4 down with only 7 holes to play they managed to win the 18th for a magnificent 1 up victory which meant that Gloucestershire took a 4-0 lead into lunch.

With confidence now flowing the message was to go out and win your own point in the afternoon and forget about the morning score as every point was important and the final league standing could come down to match points difference. This certainly seemed to be taken onboard as the team won the first 6 matches in the singles and only lost the final two matches with both going down the 18th.

Joe Biscoe led the way with a convincing 4&3 victory followed closely behind by Ethan Holway who also recorded the same margin of victory. Ryan Prosser managed a 3&1 victory with some solid golf and Lee Hanson won the last 2 holes to win 1 up making sure of the match overall victory and a great debut. Neil Tocknell won 4&2 and Charlie Taylor-Madge also secured a win double with a 3&2 victory, in the 7th match Dylan Duffy was involved in a terrific match going down to couple of late birdies to lose 1 down and in the final match Dave Allison fought to the end in another close match before finishing 2 down.

A terrific final score of 10-2 means that the team go into the final league match at Glamorgan  next weekend knowing the title is in their own hands now and all to play for.

Special thanks as always go to Alan Robinson and Ian Hughes for their continued support and assistance and for Lansdown Golf Club and their members for hosting the team, their hospitality was first class and condition of the course was excellent.
