Channel League Finals Day

Channel League Finals at Clyne Golf Club – Sunday 15th October 2023

The Channel League Finals day on Sunday consisted of four U18s and two U16s from all the Channel League Counties – Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire, Glamorgan & Gwent – who were competing for the Channel League shield with the best 5 from 6 gross scores counting towards the team trophy. An individual gross prize was also awarded to the player producing the best gross score on the day. The four U18 boys representing the GGU were  Brandon Skidmore (Cotswold Hills); Ashley Millington (The Players); Toby Janes (The Kendleshire) & Finn Ellis (Bristol & Clifton) and the two U16s were Ambrose Eaves (Broadway) & Jaxson Perry (The Kendleshire).

As everyone arrived at the Course, we were blessed with some fantastic weather. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, there as very little wind and this weather stayed with us all day providing some excellent golfing conditions. All the boys were in good spirits and looking forward to the challenge ahead on what can only be described as a very tricky golf course. Given the recent downpours, conditions on the course were wetter than you would expect for mid-October and the greens were probably slower than normal making putting that much more difficult. Brandon led the team out and played some good golf going out but fell away on the back nine. Ash was next and after a very bad start, he recovered superbly to play the last 16 holes in -3. Toby played solidly all day to record the best GGU individual score (+2) and whilst Finn had a solid start, he unfortunately fell away on the back 9. Ambrose was steady throughout his round to be +3 at the end, as was Jaxson who hit 16 out of the 18 of the greens but his putting was not up to his usual high standards and was his downfall on the day.

The GGU best 5 from 6 team score was a total of 378 (+18)  which was some 10 shots behind Glamorgan who won the tournament with 368(+10). Winner of the individual gross prize was Dewi John from Somerset who shot a gross 72 (-2).

The Channel League trophies were also presented on the day with Wiltshire winning the U16 League and both Gloucestershire & Somerset tying for the U18 league on the same number of points and exactly the same overall score in games won & lost. Each County will now hold the Channel League Shield for 6 months. The final U18 Channel League table was as follows:

Overall, the GGU U18s have had a successful year in the Channel league and it’s just a shame that we came up short on Sunday. Our thanks go to Mark Evans from Glamorgan for organising Finals day at Clyne and for ensuring that everything ran so smoothly. Thanks also go to Clyne Gold Club for hosting the event and making sure that everyone was fed and watered on the day.

Well that’s it for another season and we can now look forward to celebrating it at the Presentation Evening on Friday 10th November at the Kendleshire.
