U16's Shine at Channel League Vs Somerset

The GGU U16 squad followed up their opening Channel League win over Wiltshire with a highly impressive win over a young Somerset side at Weston Super Mare. The team met early and were greeted by some misty drizzle which, fortunately, cleared before the match got underway.

Ollie Crowley and Leo Powell led the way in the morning foursomes, winning a hard fought match 2&1. Ethan Holway (Captain) and Sam Edlin struggled to find any kind of form in match 2 and were beaten 6&4. However, the next 3 matches yielded a further 3 points for the GGU. Jaxson Perry and Reggie Phelps recorded 4 birdies on their way to a 5&3 win, Ted Ballard and Djib Ali put in their usual strong performance in winning 6&4 and, after a nervy start, Roo Jones and Jackson Wojahn-Parker recorded the biggest win of the morning, 6&5. This gave us a 4 – 1 lead at lunchtime and the confidence boost ahead of the singles was plain to see.

It was surprising therefore to see Leo, who led the team out in the singles, 2 down at the turn. However, he turned his match around in incredible fashion, winning the next 6 holes to take his match 4&3. Ethan had a hard fought battle in match 2 against one of the pairing that had beaten him and Sam in the morning, eventually winning 1 up and hitting 2 excellent shots into the final green to seal his victory. From there on it was almost one-way traffic with Jaxson Perry winning 6&4, Ollie Crowley 7&5, Ted Ballard 5&3, Roo Jones 6&5, Djib Ali 5&3, Sam Edlin 4&3 and Reggie Phelps 6&5. Jackson Wojahn-Parker was playing the other member of Somerset’s winning pair and, despite battling all the way to the final green, unfortunately lost his match.

The final score was 13-2 to Gloucestershire and it has to be said that there was some high quality golf played throughout the day by all members of the team. This is reflected in the high margins of victory.

The match was played in a tremendous spirit throughout, and our thanks go to both the Somerset Golf Union and Weston Super Mare Golf Club for hosting us. The course was in fabulous condition and received many plaudits throughout the day.

I would also like to thank the large number of supporters that we had at Weston for the help that they provided. A good day had by all.
