GGU U12's win against Somerset

With the summer holidays now upon us a mix of our U14 and CAP squads met for our returning development U12 fixture against Somerset. As we found on an all squad training day a couple of years back the mix of tee positions and undulating greens around Lydney’s 9 hole layout would provide the ideal setting for our greensomes match

Some nervy expressions were soon wiped away as player after player took on the tight opening tee shot with both Oscar Linton and Luis Brain getting very close to the green on the short opening hole. Somerset took hold strongly of match 3 where Henry and Thomas struggled around the greens going 4 down after 5 while Oscar and Jack Lockwood took command in the top match despite giving 9 shots.. The other 3 matches hung in the balance with the 14h seeing a great par save from Luis and Josh, Will and Jack build some momentum with some clever play while Sonny and Alex getting all the way back from 2 down to start the last loop up

After making a mini charge back it was just a touch too far for Henry and Thomas who fell 8&6 while at the top Jack and Oscar had been pinned back by shot holes so stood on the last one up before nerveless play secured a 2 up win. Meanwhile Josh and Luis fought back winning 17 to take their match down 18 but just took on a touch too much going for the win and fell at the last which was soon evened by Will and Jack Douglas making a gritty win on 15 to take their match 4&3 leaving the whole match hanging on the last match

A messy 15 saw it all square on 16 where a great approach from Sonny put the pressure on the Somerset pair who then went long while Alex cosied a tricky downhiller to the hole side and return to 1 up. Both pairs had a slight struggle up the 17th with Somerset through the back in 3 Sonny then quietly got his approach inside 10 feet for 4 which after their opponents failed to get up and down left Alex to calmy slot away the par putt to take their match 2&1 and the match 3-2

It has to be said the matches were played in great spirit with the boys gelling and chatting away like veterans in a matter of minutes. Huge thanks to past president Alan Robinson and everyone at Lydney for providing an ideal venue, food and great support and to Richard and the Somerset boys for being such lively and friendly opposition Also a huge thanks to all the parents for negotiating the highways agency’s myriad of diversions to get the boys there but providing such great and much appreciated support

So with Jeff Hall summer season well upon its on the various Junior Opens and regional events to test the mettle before the return to school
