GGU 1ST TEAM V WILTSHIRE AT FOREST HILLS GC ON 9 MAY '21
8 & 6 win in the morning foursomes
I am delighted to report a great but very close 8-7 win against Wiltshire today at a beautifully presented Forest Hills.
The morning foursomes started off with two superb wins from Jack Cope / Tom Workman and Joe Harvey / Jake Phillips. However the other matches could have gone either way but in true GGU tradition the guys dug in deep to complete a 4-1 lead going into the afternoon. There was a notable performance from Milan Reed a 16 year old junior making his debut appearance in the County 1st team - he wasn’t phased at all.
The singles commenced positively enough, but through 6 holes our top 4 seemed a bit out of sorts and this continued throughout their respective matches, although I have to say it was a ‘never say die’ performance from them all as they gave their very best. Jack Cope and Joe Harvey fought valiantly taking their point on the 18th green. Step up Hale and Sullivan who just looked to be in so much control of their games to take us ever closer to the magic 8 points. Then, losing the next 3 games left a lone Kieran Sutton on the course and he stood on 17 all square. We needed to halve the game and my stomach was churning inside out as Wiltshire’s Guy Drayton went 1 up playing 18. We needed something special from young Sutton and he didn’t disappoint as he rolled in a 25 foot birdie putt on the 18th to take the match, and what makes it all the more special - he didn’t have a clue how important that putt was!
I would like to thank our President Tim Clink for his support for the whole day and also our Chairman and his wife Ian & Mary Cornwell and Ian and Vicky Watkins. Lastly to Past President Alan Robinson who never fails to put a smile on everyone’s face.
