Gloucestershire golfers a Putt above the rest at South West Week

Gloucestershire golfers beat some of the best amateur players in the region last week to become winners of the England Golf County Qualifier, The South West Inter-Counties Match Play shield and The South Western Counties Amateur Championship.

South West Week was played at Burnham & Berrow Golf Club in Somerset from Saturday 5 to Friday 11 June 2021 and included the six competing counties of Gloucestershire, Dorset, Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Despite mostly kind weather there were some challenging wind conditions but it didn’t stop the ‘Green Army’ from delivering an exceptional performance to become winners of the matchplay, the England qualifier and the individual strokeplay.

Gary Ward, County Captain, said “I am so very, very proud of my team. Their behavior is exemplary. Their boundless enthusiasm is infectious and their quality of golf is the envy of many. It was a dream come true.”

His team of Edward Butler, Nick Day, Joe Harvey, Haider Hussain, Jake Phillips & Thomas Workman recorded a score of 854 and a twenty stroke victory in The England Golf County Qualifier. They will now go on to compete at the County Finals at Remedy Oak Golf Club in September, after having last qualified for the event in 2018.

The South Western Counties Amateur Championship was held with a reduced field of sixty players this year because of Covid-19 restrictions but the scoring was still outstanding, resulting in a win for Edward Butler (Lansdown Golf Club) with scores of 67 + 67 = 134 and a slender one shot victory over the runner-up.

Alongside the celebrations of the 1st Team, Gloucestershire’s U16/U14 team won a clean sweep of the main prizes at the South West U16/14 Championship at Mendip Spring on Friday 4th June.

English Amateur Champion, Jack Cope (The Players Club), lifted the St Andrews Links Trophy in the same week as his team mates were competing in Somerset and the current British Amateur Champion Joe Long (Lansdown Golf Club) will be competing in the US Open this weekend –17th to 20th June.
