As seems to be the norm for U14 matches this year good weather presented itself for our final match of the season playing behind the first team v Glamorgan.
Both teams seemed inspired with opening tee shots splitting the fairway but soon a pattern started to emerge with Riley and Jackson sitting nicely on the 4th green before their opponents chipped in to win the hole. A similar fate fell on Dylan and Edison with their opponents similarly closing it in around the 5th green while Reggie and Ambrose couldn't really recover from some early shot holes. Charlie and Will had a very flowing game but needed something special on 9 to pull it back but the Somerset pair managed to hold, so it was left to Ted and Djib who rode their luck on 8 to get a chance up 9 with ice in the veins par securing them a half. This all gave a serious advantage to Somerset going into lunch
Reggie followed by Ted led out the afternoon singles with early shot holes leaving them just a bit too much work to do. Ambrose meanwhile despite being outdriven continually managed to win 16 and 17 to get to all square on the 18th before trying to take on a bit too much and losing out. Riley with a blitz of wins on 12-16 took his match and got some greenback on the board followed by Djib both playing excellent approach's to the tough front pin on 16 in the process. Meanwhile Jackson, despite giving 6 shots showed steely nerve to hold on for half down the last while Edison took inspiration from his Dad in the first team match playing professional short shots into 9 and 16 to take his match.
Although by this point Somerset had claimed the match Dylan and Will were both fighting on 17 and 18 with Dylan just trying to do a bit much on the last to try and get the half in his match while Wills greenside bunker shot on 17 helped close the door to win his
Thanks to Richard and all at Somerset GU for a great day of golf and to Henbury GC for providing an ideal venue and great food. Also a huge thanks to all the parents for not only getting the boys there but providing such great and much-appreciated support.
With some lessons learned and with achievements to be proud of, we now move onto more Jeff Hall events before the climax of the season 'The Road to Frilford'.
