GGU Seniors Channel League V Glamorgan

Gloucestershire Seniors had the toughest Channel League start possible on Monday 15th April against Glamorgan at Radyr Golf Club.  With several home club players in the Glamorgan team it was clear that they will be the team to beat again this season.  Playing conditions were about as challenging as it gets but, as they say, “it’s the same for both teams!”

In the morning greensomes Gloucestershire matched Glamorgan and it was clear the home side were disappointed.  It speaks volumes for the Gloucestershire men that they too were disappointed and they felt they could have been in front at the lunch break.  With wins from Brian Mitten and Mike Jarvis along with Rich Wood and Andy Wright with a half point delivered by Steve Yorke and Nick Barwood the afternoon session lay in wait along with some pretty awful weather.

By mid afternoon, neither team was a clear winner with all matches evenly balanced.  Home advantage and some very good golf by some talented players won over in the end with Glamorgan winning by an overall score of 10 points to 5.  Cyprus Seniors Open Champion, Andy Wright delivered two points on the day.  With partner Rich Wood he won the morning greensomes match and was the only winner for Gloucestershire in the singles.  Nick Barwood and Brian Mitten were also unbeaten on the day.

Huge thanks to the team at Radyr Golf Club who went to extraordinary lengths to prepare the course for competition golf.  The communication from Golf Manager Matt, Rich the Pro and the head greenkeeper was a credit to the club.

Gloucestershire’s next match is the annual friendly versus Worcestershire on 26th April at Droitwich.
