Seniors WIN Channel League against Gwent

MATCH REPORT GLOUCESTERSHIRE SENIORS V GWENT 8/7/2024

Gloucestershire Seniors travelled to the superb Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club on Monday 8th July to draw swords with a notoriously uncharitable Gwent team.

Without the benefit of a practice round the Gloucestershire men would need to delve into their full repertoire of greensomes match play skills.  And so they did.  With Steve Yorke and Nick Barwood finding themselves behind early on, the responsibility to kick-start some momentum fell to Tim Clink and Nigel Gravelle.  Opting to take Gravelle's drive on the second (Clink's ball was found later that day!) they were up and running and delivered Gloucestershire's first point of the morning session.  Mike Jarvis and Mike Burris paired for a second match together and forged a strong link with consecutive greensomes wins.  Bristol & Clifton's David Law, in his first County Seniors match accompanied the experienced Andy Wright.  Their half in a keenly fought encounter guaranteed parity in the morning exchanges until Nick Morris and Tim Rogers turned their match around to give Gloucestershire a 3 ½ to 1 ½ lead at the break.

Yet again, Gloucestershire showed that they are a match for most teams right through the field from top to tail.  In the first four matches Nick Barwood, Steve Yorke and Nigel Gravelle won impressively and in so doing made life extremely difficult for Gwent.  When Mike Burris won his match to get Gloucestershire to the threshold of 7 ½ points just half a point was needed to win the match.  Andy Wright had the opportunity to seal the deal and it was no surprise to anyone that he held on to close things out with a very competent victory.  The final three singles went to Gwent but it was not enough to prevent a very welcome away win for Gloucestershire 8 ½ to 6 ½.

Huge thanks to Rolls of Monmouth where the hospitality and the superb condition of the course are the reasons why it is visited by so many.
