On Thursday 1st August over 110 Senior golfers from across Gloucestershire took to Stinchcombe Hill GC to battle it out to be crowned GGU Seniors Champion along with many other category of prize that were on offer. The golf course was presented beautifully and we were fortunate that the threat of thunder and lightening did not get close enough to affect play. It appeared to be a good day for golf with very little wind. For most of the day the par of the course was not threatened until Nick Brown (Cirencester) came in with an impressive 70 which set the clubhouse lead with a good number of groups still left to come in. Nick's nett score of 62 was also the target to beat.
Nick had what must have felt like a very lengthy wait to find out if 70 was good enough or if extra holes were required to find the Champion. A few players came close and most notably Gary Box (Stinchcombe Hill) who carded a 71. In the penultimate group Ken Madden (Lansdown) knocked Nick off the top spot after he fired a best of the day 69 and with that he was crowned Gloucestershire Golf Union Seniors Champion. Well done Ken and we wish him the very best of luck when he represents Gloucestershire in the England Golf Champion of Champions event at Woodhall Spa in September.
Nick Brown took second place in the gross but kept his place on top as the net winner. In second and losing on countback, was Jeffrey Charles (Ross-on-Wye).
The age group categories were won by:
55-59 Gary Box (Stinchcombe Hill), runner up Tim Clink (Lilley Brook)
60-64 Nick Barwood (Knowle), runner up John Clayton (Bristol & Clifton)
65-69 Alistair Johnston (Bristol & Clifton), runner up Simon Mills (Cotswold Hills)
Over 70s Alan Dangerfield (Minchinhampton), runner up Peter Millet (Bristol & Clifton)
The team competition for the MacAllan Trophy was won by the Bristol & Clifton team of Ian James, Alistair Johnston and Kevin Ramshaw.
