Seniors beaten by Dorset at Lyme Regis GC

Winning Channel League games away from home gets harder every year and having won their previous away match it would be a tall order away to a strong Dorset team.

With two players suffering ailments during practice on Sunday, the omens were beginning to stack up against the Gloucestershire team.  On the morning of the match it was clear that Andy Wright was not going to make the first tee.  County Vice President Richard Salter who has supported the team home and away, rain and shine stood up to the plate.  With a set of hired clubs he partnered Simon Hale in the morning greensomes and gave it his all.  The strength at the top of the order gained worthy half points with Steve Yorke and Nick Barwood along with Tim Clink and Nigel Gravelle matching Dorset's home advantage.  The remaining three pairs all took their Dorset adversaries to the last but the points went to the home team.

The afternoon singles saw the undoing of the Gloucestershire men.  Simon Hale posted an excellent half point in the top match and Nick Barwood was his usual reliable self adding another half point.  Steve Yorke and Tim Clink fought manfully against quality opposition losing narrowly and Nigel Gravelle was almost speechless having taken Gary Earl all the way in a tightly fought match.  The first win of the afternoon came from Captain Nick Morris.  His opponent , Ashley Beckett managed to square a three hole deficit before Morris won the 16th and 17th to take the match.  Ken Madden was in control from the very start of his match and ran out an impressive 6 and 4 win.  With Vernon Chappell and Mike Jarvis losing their matches the overall result was a 11/4 victory for Dorset on a very impressive Lyme Regis Golf Club.  Losing is never on the agenda in County Golf but from the photographs it's clear the enjoyment everyone has in these events.
