After our drowning at Cirencester last week the grey drizzly skies that welcomed us to South Wales were not the greatest omens for our 27 holes against Glamorgan but as the lads arrived and pairings were settled the sun started to poke through for the opening 9 holes foursomes
Ernie and Jack led us off splitting the first fairway followed by strong starts from Will and Oli, Will Robinson and Billy, Alfie and Sammy and Noah and Harry. The opening exchanges saw things going both ways with the top match being 3 up after 3 while the second were 4 down after 4 which in the quick sprint of 9 hole foursomes was how the matches went however despite going 2 down after 4 in match 4 halving the 6th in birdies inspired Sammy and Alfie who would then go on to win the match with another birdie on 9th itself while the other 2 matches going to 9th brought a point a piece and halved the mornings golf
For the afternoon singles not only did the sun come out but the wind started to get up leading all the matches to swap leads often across the front 9 with crucial small leads in the top and bottom matches, at the turn where some key approaches on the 9th keeping the momentum the boys way. Soon Jack would build a solid lead with a strong approach to 15 and close it out although Will Robinson would also fall to some very consistent play from Glamorgan to even the afternoon.
It would then transpire that holes 16-18 would be oh so crucial with Ernie, Will Coddington and Oli all taking their matches to the last with unfortunately only Ernie managing to close it to win. However 16 would see us have 3 matches going in up and Billy pulling back to 1 down on the dogleg right before just coming up short.. However Harry and Sammy extended leads on 16 which they closed out on 17 leaving the way for the youngest member of the squad, Noah Slatter to repeat his performance from Worcestershire and hole the putt that not only won his match but gave us an overall win 8.5 to 6.5
Big thanks to Mark and Paul and all at Glamorgan for such a warm welcome and golf played with such a smile and enthusiasm as well as Grove for providing us with a great venue. Big big thanks to all the parents for getting the boys to this and all the matches through the year and providing such invaluable support
This being our final match of 2024 meant that the U14's have won all their inter county matches this year, a great feat especially when you consider this year was an away year on courses virtually all the boys had never seen before. This leaves the Jeff Hall OOM and some training session to help the boys to build on this success going forward
