GLOUCESTERSHIRE SENIORS SIGN OFF 2024 WITH A WIN
In the match report from the previous Channel League match against Cornwall it was made very clear that Gloucestershire Seniors needed to beat Devon in order to salvage some pride at the end of the 2024 season. They did just that!
With the return of Tim Rogers, the absence of Steve Yorke was adequately covered. Rogers and playing partner Nick Barwood quite simply stormed into an early lead and posted Gloucestershire's first point of the day in the greensomes. The Devon pair of Paul Newcombe and Andy Copping needed to be at their best to bring Devon level again by beating Dave Law and Andy Wright. In the third match, Tim Clink and Nigel Gravelle looked likely to take a fall but they picked themselves up and slid through against a very experienced pairing of Rick Osborne and Andy Procter. County champion Ken Madden and Simon Hale fought for a sound half before Vernon Chappell and Nick Morris were taken down by Tony Allsopp and Tim Jones.
With everything to play for at 2 ½ to 2 ½ it was the responsibility of Nick Barwood to cast the first stone. Losing only once all season it was absolutely no surprise that he took the first point but against the legendary Tim Aggett it was, by no means, a foregone conclusion. The margin of just one hole tells the story of that encounter. Tim Clink took his second point of the day with a win over Devon's Dave Eva. Clink is unbeaten in his last two Channel League matches. The middle matches yielded two points each with Andy Wright and Tim Rogers adding points for Gloucestershire, Rogers clearly indicating his readiness for the upcoming Southern Counties Foursomes final. With the match evenly poised Gloucestershire needed to find 1 ½ points to snatch a morale boosting victory. Nick Morris and Devon's Colin Papworth were all square after 15 holes. Morris won the difficult 16th to go 1 up but Papworth impressively birdied the par three 17th. Both players succumbed to the pressure of a “black ball game†and halved their match. Once again it was down to Simon Hale in the last match against Tony Allsopp. With both players finding trouble on the last hole, Allsopp found himself faced with a putt to halve the match. After shaving the hole it was for Simon Hale to hole a tricky 6 foot down hill putt to give Gloucestershire a fine win against a very talented and determined Devon team. Well done boys!!
In the final chapter of the 2024 season Gloucestershire Seniors take on Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Sussex in the Southern Counties Foursomes final at Weston Super Mare Golf Club on Thursday 19th September.
