Seniors Captain, Nick Morris and his team represented Gloucestershire at the Southern Counties Foursomes Finals held at Weston Super Mare on Thursday 19th September.
Gloucestershire Seniors travelled the short distance to Weston Super Mare Golf Club to take on Sussex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire in the 2024 edition of the Southern Counties Foursomes Finals. Gloucestershire won their qualifier for the second year running at Lilley Brook GC in June and would need to be at their very best to overcome Bedfordshire and the heavyweights, Sussex and Hertfordshire.
At a blustery Weston, conditions would certainly have an impact on the day with the course in great condition and the greens hard and fast. After the morning session things were very much even with Gloucestershire pairings., Nigel Gravelle with Tim Clink, Andy Wright with Mike Jarvis and Nick Morris with Ken Madden taking three impressive points against strong opposition. Only half a point separated Gloucestershire from Sussex and Hertfordshire.
The afternoon matches failed to live up to expectation with only Mike Burris and David Law avoiding defeat. In the other matches Nick Barwood and Time Rogers along with Nick Morris and Ken Madden took their matches to the very last. Hertfordshire were the eventual winners by virtue of holes won in a countback with Sussex.
THANKS
On a separate note, this is Nick Morris signing off as Gloucestershire Seniors Captain. I have had a wonderful time and have been blessed with wonderful golfers to choose from, all of whom are even better people. Captaining any team can be difficult at times but the enthusiasm demonstrated by all involved has been superb. Thank you so much to all the players who have supported me over the last five seasons.
I also need to mention the support I have received from Gloucestershire Golf Union. Dean Newbold for his absolute professionalism and friendship along the way. Debbie for being so on the ball with communications and social media and of course Dereck Buttler and Ian Hughes for their continued support at each and every match. No other counties do it the way Gloucestershire do.
Next year's captain will be announced officially in due course. The standard of seniors golf gets higher every year with every county being able to field scratch and plus handicappers in abundance. There are some interesting “youngsters†coming through in the next couple of years and I am certain that the seniors will be in a position to bring home some silverware.
