Everyone turned up in good time at Filton GC for the final Channel league match of the season against Glamorgan to discover very tough conditions with high winds to contend with. Unfortunately, Glamorgan only turned up with 9 players so they had to concede both a foursomes and singles match meaning that the team were 2 v 0 up from the start.
With the morning foursomes pairings decided in advance, Finn Ellis & Leo Powell led the way and were 3 down with 4 to play but managed to win the last 4 holes to secure a 1 up victory. Joel Warne & Oscar Linton were next up and after a very tight match they just came up short losing 2 & 1. Reggie Phelps & Jackson Wojahn-Parker were always in control of their match winning 5&4 and the 4th pairing of James Sayce & Riley Wood put up a great performance to win their match 7&6. The final pairing of Djib Ali & Zak Armstrong secured their point due to the no show of one of the Glamorgan players, but they did play against the single Glamorgan player to ensure they had a game. So the boys headed into lunch in good spirits and 4 v 1 up in the match.
The afternoon singles saw some excellent golf from the boys which resulted in them all winning their matches so it was a superb 10 v 0 victory in the afternoon and an overall score of 14 v 1 in favour of Gloucestershire.
Our thanks go to Filton Golf Club for hosting the event and presenting the course in such good condition given the extreme weather conditions of late. Thanks also to the bar & catering team for keeping the boys fed and watered during the day and a special mention for Marcus Phelps for running the team on the day as he clearly did a great job!
This victory against Glamorgan ensured that the U18s have won the Channel League to go alongside winning Severnside last month so another great year for the boys who of course qualified for the England Finals played in Teignmouth GC last month too. Our next event is the Channel League Finals day at Tredegar Park GC on Sunday 13th October where a team of 6 (4 U18s & 2 U16s) will compete for that trophy and our final tournament of the year will be the re-arranged Midland 4 Counties event at Trentham on 30th/31st October.
