The U18 boys arrived at Filton in glorious sunshine for our annual fixture against the GLCGA 1st team and thankfully, the weather was excellent all day which was great news given the recent conditions. Although wet underfoot in places, the course played really well and congratulations to Filton for presenting the course in such great shape on the day.
With the pairings finalised, it was then a question of agreeing the format and how many shots would be given. It ended up with a greensomes format where both players drive, each player then hits each others drive and you then play foursomes from there on. This took a while to sink in but the boys soon got the hang of it!
It was then a question of agreeing the shot situation and whilst it was agreed we would play off scratch, the Ladies wanted the number of shots for the difference in slope rating which was 4. So the Ladies had 4 shots in each game, other than the last game which was played off scratch because unfortunately, one of the Ladies was injured on Saturday and told not to play by the England South West Strength & Conditioning coach. So in the last game there were two singles matches played where the one Lady played against both boys!
Reggie & Charlie Pearce-Ward led the team out and had a great game against Mariella Buchanan and Jo Hodge eventually losing on the 18th 1 down and under par for their round. Next up were Riley Wood & Oscar Linton who were 3up at one stage against Summer Carash & Taylor Hodgson but couldn’t hold on and lost 3&1 in the end. Third off was Jackson Wojahn-Parker & Ben Warwicker against Claudia Ovens & Sam Round and whilst the odd hole was exchanged here and there, this was a really close match which ended up in a Half to put some points on the board for the boys. Unfortunately this was the last of the points because James Sayce & Edison Butler lost 2&1 to Francis Sullivan & Rosie Boyle, Charlie Ford & Oscar Horler lost 7&5 to Alecia Carash & Lizzie Robbins and Tom Chapman & Ethan Jay lost 1 Down to Molly Douglas and Regina Chiu. Tom & Ethan were 4up after 12 but 4 birdies in the last 6 holes from the opposition cemented their defeat.
The final match was an all B&C affair with both Ernie Elford & Jack Lockwood playing their individual matches against a very experienced Alex Saunders. Both boys went up early in the match but Alex clawed her way back beating Jack 3&2 and then beating Ernie on the 18th by holing a very good 10 footer to secure the win 1up.
So the final result was 7.5 v 0.5 to the GLCGA and congratulations on a great win to them. All the matches were played in a great spirit and hopefully the boys will reflect on this result to spur them on to greater things in the season ahead!
Our thanks go to Filton Golf Club for hosting the event and providing us with refreshments at the end of the match, as well as giving us the opportunity to play our first match off the year. The U18 Captain, Reggie Phelps announced the score at the end and wished the GLCGA every success in the year ahead. My personal thanks go to County President Ian Hughes, Vice President Richard Salter and Immediate Past President Dereck Buttler for their support on the day.
Our next event is the Midland 4 Counties which the GGU are hosting this year at Forest Hills on 15/16 April. We will be fielding a team of 8 and all supporters will be welcome.
