The County Seniors started the 2025 season on the Avening Course at Minchinhampton GC with a narrow 3-2 defeat to the County Seniors Ladies Team.
After all the shots had been agreed in the clubhouse, the first pairing of debutants Chris Newman and Guy Whittern, found that Seniors Golf might not be so easy. Giving 9 shots is always a difficult task particularly when the opponent who is receiving those shots, plays to 3! Unfortunately, the result was a 5&4 victory for the ladies.
In the second match, seasoned seniors, Steve Yorke and Nick Barwood, lost narrowly 2&1 in a high quality match. The focus then fell on the third match which featured the teams oldest player Nick Morris, and his partner, debutant James Webber, who despite being a senior, is young enough to be Nick’s son. Nick didn’t make a huge contribution as he admired James’ fantastic golf to display his undoubted talent with the pair running out winners, 2up.
So, the match result came down to the last two matches which were both very close. Mike Burris and Dave Law went to the 18th tee 1 down but both missed birdies putts to level their match. The new Captain, Tim Clink and his partner Nigel Gravelle played some superb golf to prevail by 2 holes despite their opponent Mary Mayes holing every putt she looked at.
A great day, with a tight match, played in a good spirit which all enjoyed. Many congratulations to Frances and her ladies team on their victory. Many thanks also to Minchinhampton Golf Club for hosting the match.
The Seniors next outing is against Worcestershire at Gloucester GC on 25th April.
