109th County Championship - Day 1

On Saturday 17th May fifty-nine of the best golfers from across Gloucestershire took to Chipping Sodbury GC to do battle over 36 holes on Day 1 of the 109th County Championship. The top 30 and ties would progress to play a further 36 holes on Sunday 18th May. The golf course was presented in pristine condition and the weather was favourable for good scoring. Also being played for on Day 1 was the Winterbotham Cup where the winning club will go on to represent Gloucestershire at the England Golf Champion Club event which is being held at The Oaks GC in September. The Colts (u22) trophy would also be played for over the first 36 holes.

After the morning rounds Nick Day (Henbury) led the way after carding 70 (-2). In second place on 72 (Level) were 4 players - Will Rawlins (Chipping Sodbury), James Bath (Forest Hills), Nathan Moore (Long Ashton) & Lewis Stalley (Brickhampton Court). In a tie for third on 73 (+1) were four further players. The field were all chasing Nick going into Round 2 but there was still plenty of golf to be played.

Nick Day added a 71 to his morning round of 70 to give him a 36 hole total of 141 (-3) and an overnight lead of four strokes. It was his brother Mike Day (Henbury) who added an afternoon score of 72 to his morning's 73 to leave him in second place and four shots back. The two Day brothers would be paired together for Rounds 3 & 4. Also on +1 total after adding 73 to his morning's 73 was Nathan Moore. Ash Millington & Lewis Stalley occupied third spot on 146 (+2). And it was these two players who were joint best in the Colts Championship with Ash Millington taking home the trophy after countback.

The 36 hole cut of the top 30 and ties fell at 159.

The Winterbotham Trophy was won by the Henbury trio of Mike Day, Calum Mortimore and Nick Day who's 36 hole aggregate total with the best two from three scores of 286 (-2) was good enough to secure victory by 12 strokes from The Players Club. We wish the Henbury team and the club the very best of luck for the England Golf Champion Club event later in the year.

The 109th County Championship is finely poised ahead of Day 2 and best of luck to those who made the cut.
