Gloucestershire U16's Lose to Wiltshire

Under 16s Channel League vs Wiltshire on the 18th May 2025 at Chippenham Golf Club

The Under 16s played their first Channel league game of the season against a very strong and experienced Wiltshire side.

The morning foursomes started brightly with some good interaction between the groups and some excellent early golf.

The older Wiltshire squad gradually took control of all matches with their size and distance often telling on the longer holes meaning that any early advantage had been eroded come the back 9.

As the five pairs went deeper into the round, it became clear that we were struggling to match the Wiltshire scores, meaning that at lunch we were trailing 5-0.

After some food, the boys remained positive and headed out for the afternoon singles matches with renewed vigour and energy.

In every match we were faced with lower handicappers in opposition but all games were close from the outset with some very impressive scoring from both sides on show.

A lot of the matches went to at least the 17th hole and stayed close throughout but we couldn’t get enough falling in our favour resulting in a 8-2 loss in the singles.

Jack and Alex both halved their games and special mention to Patrick who got an excellent win after being 4 down at one stage but came back to win 4 and 3.

Although the final 13-2 scoreline was harsh on the boys they performed with courage throughout and never stopped trying in the face of adversity.

The effort and team spirit was excellent throughout and they will improve for this. They worked hard and the attitude of all was first rate throughout. Heads never dropped and we kept trying right to the final hole which was great to see.

A massive thanks to Ian and his Wiltshire team who were very impressive in all their performances.

Chippenham Golf Club was a great venue for the match and the course was in very good condition with the greens running true. Moreover they looked after both teams all day with food and drink and we are very appreciative of all their hard work.

Finally a big thanks to all the parents for their support and attendance on a long hot day. It means a lot and really helps to support the boys especially in a tough match like this.

MATCH RESULTS

The next training session for the team will be 25th May at Cirencester.

Ben Lockwood - Manager of the day.
