On Wednesday 23rd July over 85 Senior golfers from across Gloucestershire took to Lilley Brook GC to battle it out to be crowned GGU Seniors Champion along with many other category of prize that were on offer. The golf course was presented beautifully and it appeared to be a good day for golf. The general scoring on the day was very good with lots of good gross and net scores coming in.
Mark Hall (Lilley Brook) carded an impressive 72 which was the clubhouse lead at the time with a good few groups still left to come in. Mark had an anxious wait as the last group holed out on 18 but his 72 was good enough to secure him the crown of GGU Seniors Champion. He beat the very recent South West Seniors Champion, Matt Stanford (Players Club), by a single stroke after he finished on 73. Well done Mark and we wish you the very best of luck when you represent Gloucestershire in the England Golf Champion of Champions event at Woodhall Spa in September.
In the net event, the winner was also a Lilley Brook member, John Lannon, after he scored a best of the day 66. His score was matched by Mark Hall but on this occasion Mark missed out on countback and had to settle for 2nd place.
The age group categories were won by:
55-59 Mike Burris (Forest Hills), runner up Mark Bisset (Cirencester)
60-64 Nick Barwood (Knowle), runner up Steve Smart (Lilley Brook)
65-69 John Appleby (Cirencester), runner up Nigel Clarke (Minchinhampton)
Over 70s Hugh Purvis (Long Ashton), runner up Adrian Chandler (Cotswold Edge)
The team competition for the MacAllan Trophy was won by the Cirencester team of John Appleby, Mark Bisset and Adam Collins.
