GGU Second team defeated against Dyfed

The 2nd team made the long trip down to Carmarthen Golf Club for their 1st Wessex League fixture of the season against Dyfed at the weekend.

The weather was awful for the start of the match with heavy rain falling for the first hour making it very tough, this did not seem to cause any problems for our 2nd pairing of Dan Page and Ambrose Eaves (making his debut) who were in blistering form and won the first 8 holes of their match and only halving the 9th hole leaving a putt on the edge of the hole before then winning the 10th to record a fabulous 9&8 victory. The first match of Ryan Prosser and Tom Flyn was more of a battle with the Dyfed pair single putting 6 of the first 7 greens to take control but despite fighting all the way to the last hole they lost out 2 down.

The 3rd match saw Neil Tocknell and Lee Hanson who drove the ball exquisitely have an up and down match for 7 holes before winning several holes in a row around the turn and eventually wining by a 5&4 margin. The last match of the morning was also a very tight affair with Joel Warne and Alex Ward (also making his debut) battling all 18 holes and eventually losing 1 down which meant the lunchtime score was evenly balanced at 2-2.

With the weather now much improved it was all to play for in the singles although a strong wind blew throughout the afternoon causing club selection a problem on the Par 3's in particular for players.

The star performers in the foursomes were sent out in the first 2 matches but were unable to carry on their form with Dan Page losing 4&3 and Ambrose Eaves losing 3&1, having a long break and not much knowledge on the back 9 seemed to be the down falling! Third out was Neil Tocknell who had a up and down match with both players up at one stage in the round but in the end a honourable halved match the outcome. Lee Hanson got off to a terrible start which left him too much to do on the back nine and despite fighting back lost by 3&2. So with only a half point to show for from the first 4 matches there was a lot to do for the remainder but this started well with Ryan Prosser putting in an excellent display of pin seeking to secure a 5&4 victory there was still hope of recording a comeback. Joel Warne had a very close game going all the way to the 18th before losing 2 down, Alex Ward was well down early but showed great grit in fighting back and turning his match around to record a 2&1 victory and in the last match on the course Tom Flyn also had a close match before succumbing 2&1. Local knowledge and familiarity on the greens seemed to be the key in most of the matches was the talk after by most players.

This meant the overall result was a victory for Dyfed 7.5 to 4.5 so congratulations to Jason and his team.

Special thanks to Carmarthen Golf Club for their hospitality and welcome and their Greenstaff for the condition and presentation of the course, it really was the greenest course i have played for a long time and the lushest fairways.

Thanks also to Robbo and is novel scoring methods for his help, ably assisted by President Richard Salter. Thank you also Gary Ward for your photography work and support along with Dawn, Jess and Mia.

Not the result we were hoping for but we have the chance to bounce back quickly in our next match on 3rd August.

Neil Tocknell - 2nd Team Captain
