Gloucestershire 1st's WIN against Wiltshire at Ross-on-Wye GC

On a thunder and lightning, rain-soaked day Gloucestershire took on Wiltshire at Ross on Wye G C.

The match kicked-off at 9.00am. With 4 of the 5 pairings on the course, play was suspended as lightning struck near-by and the players were pulled off the course, for what seemed like an eternity. With the course then flooding, it was decided to take an early lunch at 11.45 and resume play at 12.15.

Back on the course, Gloucestershire moved into an early lead in all 5 matches – something they pretty much held onto, throughout the foursomes, taking the first session, 4 and a half to a half.  It was great to see Joss Edwards making his debut, scoring a half point with partner Will Rawlins. As sunset was projected to fall at 7.45, the decision was taken for the singles to follow straight after the foursomes. All credit to the players on both sides for stepping up to this ‘big ask’.

The singles got off to a flying start, being up in all 10 matches through the front 9 holes. However, Wiltshire were keen to battle on, taking the initiative in 2 matches, with 3 other matches all going down the last.

The final score for the singles  was 8 and a half – 1 and a half, giving an overall score of 13 – 2 to Gloucestershire.

Our thanks go to the management and members of Ross on Wye G C and also to the great team work from the catering, bar and pro shop staff who really could not have given any more on the day. Also, full credit to the greenkeeping staff for the course condition and the way it held up through 2 hours of torrential rain.
