Gloucestershire U16's lose to Glamorgan after huge rainstorm!

GGU U16’s v Glamorgan             The Bristol Golf Club                    07 September 2025

We arrived at the Bristol GC in plenty of time for our 9.30am start on a very quiet morning.  The boys went up to the driving range to warm up excited about the game ahead.  Suddenly around 9am the heavens opened with torrential rain and the odd clap of thunder and forked lightning thrown in for good measure ... the course was closed immediately.

Nick, the Glamorgan team manager, and I decided early on to abort the morning round and as the clock approached midday were debating whether or not to abort the whole day, when the rain stopped, the skies cleared a little and we were talking about what format to play.  Gloucestershire Captain Felix Chippendale made a good argument that the players would far sooner play their own ball and the decision was made to play singles, but in fourballs to get round as quickly as possible.

The weather settled nicely and Captain Felix led the players off but came up against an in form Thomas MacLean and after a spirited fight lost 2 and 1.  In the fourball Jack Lockwood played against Gethin Lewis and after a game that swayed both ways Jack emerged the winner by 2 and 1.

Ernie Elford and Doug McMurtry played in the next fourball against Thomas Carlson and Lucas Parry respectively. Unfortunately both Gloucestershire players lost their games, Ernie by 1 hole and Doug 3 and 2.

Billy Walker and Luis Brain followed and both lost their games, Billy to Elis Lewis and Luis to Max Lewis after fighting back to lose by just 1 hole.

Alex Hawes-Nunn and Oli Walker were next out against Fallon Sawyers-Grandon and Ben Hayes.  Alex lost 3 and 2 and Oli won 3 and 2 ... honours even!!

The final game of Josh Rigby and Alex Linton was against Geraint Barnes and Tomi Williams.  Josh won his game 3 and 2 and Alex held his game to an honourable half.

After sharing the aborted morning foursomes game 2½ each, the final score was a win for Glamorgan 9 – 6.  All games were played in a great spirit and thanks go to both teams for making a very frustrating day flow well.

Thanks also to Kelsey Haddow (Course Manager) for keeping us informed about the course closure and arranging an early afternoon start for us.

Thanks to The Bristol Golf Club for allowing us the use of their course and keeping us well fed and watered.

A big thank you to the players parents for getting their sons to the venue and having to endure a very frustrating morning waiting for the weather to clear.  Finally thanks to Vice President Pat Murphy for coming along to support the boys.
